How to ask for a raise?

How do I ask my boss for a raise and how much do I ask for?

• I am coming up on my one year at my job. I am an executive assistant to the CEO. This will be the first time that I ask for a salary increase. How do I ask my boss for a raise and how much do I ask for. I was thinking maybe 8%. I am doing my work plus another co worker's work since they quit, and I am good at what I do. I just want a little more so I don't struggle with groceries every month anymore. Thank you.

  Tread lightly...first of all you would need to find out HOW RAISES are given??? Is it yearly??? I knew someone who asked for a raise and the BOSS said basically, ......"it is not your time for a raise." She said, "Oh really?" He said yes...and looked through some papers and said "not for another year." She said, "what are you talking about? i haven't had a raise in a year." He said.."That is right, not for one year." (SO ABOUT 2 YEARS!!) She was sooo angry...But had to compose herself and go back to work...Immediately on her day off, went and found another job. Gave her two weeks notice. HEADS UP!!! Just find out first. That will save you from getting angry.
