What's up with the sympathy card?

How to address/what to say in a sympathy card concerning a death?

  • probably one of the weirdest questions you'll see on this site, but i really need help. my friend's older sister has just VERY recently passed away. i am very close to this friend, but i do not know his family personally. i didnt know his sister (the young woman that passed in a drunk driving accident) and i don't know his parents. however, they know OF me, and i know OF them. i want to send them a sympathy card so they know that i am here and praying for them. is this okay for me to send a card like this? what am i supposed to say in the card? is there anything i SHOULDNT say? what is/isn't appropriate? ANY feedback would help. thank you.

  • Answer:

its not so weird;-) we all have to ask it really, we all do it for a first time in our lives im sorry for your friends loss, and yours, you all have my condolences yes its perfectly fine, if you know they are beleivers/religious and will appreciate the sentiment if you dont know that, its best not to say anything that you wont be sure of, so its probably best not to say that all you do is stick to saying how sorry for their loss you are, that you are there if they need you, can call you any time, its about them, their loss, and your showing your thoughts are with them at this time its a thought thats given a lot at these times, but its always apreciated

A simple card with few printed words. Your written words should just say your heart is with them in this sad time. You could add you pray for God to give them peace and comfort, if you are inclined to say that. No more.

Try to tell them you care about them, and are thinking of them, without bringing up words like death or died, etc. But its ok to say the name of the person who passed away. =)
