Why is the covenant with Abraham important in Jewish history?

God's covenant with Abraham?

  • Answer:

The Covenant ws that Abraham would be the father of his nation and that his decendents would be of great number. This was unusual because he and his wife were just about past the child bearing years. He wanted Abraham to sacrifice his only son, to God. He wanted Abraham to sacrifice his only son, to God. It was successful because Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son,and went to the point of raising a knife to cut his sons throat, when God stopped him, and provided a lamb to be slain in place of the son. After proving that he wanted to please God at all expense, he and God had a great relationship. God Bless.

loufedal...

"loufedalis" was generally correct, except he gave the same answer for two questions, that God asked Abraham to sacrifice his (Abraham's) only son. The answer for "what sign of the covenant did God want Abraham to do?" should have been "God instructed Abraham to have himself all his male offspring, and his servants circumcised, and that this would be an everlasting sign of the Covenant between God and Abraham throughout all generations. See Genesis 17:9-14." 9. And God said to Abraham, "And you shall keep My covenant, you and your seed after you throughout their generations. 10. This is My covenant, which you shall observe between Me and between you and between your seed after you, that every male among you be circumcised. 11. And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be as the sign of a covenant between Me and between you. 12. And at the age of eight days, every male shall be circumcised to you throughout your generations, one that is born in the house, or one that is purchased with money, from any foreigner, who is not of your seed. 13. Those born in the house and those purchased for money shall be circumcised, and My covenant shall be in your flesh as an everlasting covenant. 14. And an uncircumcised male, who will not circumcise the flesh of his foreskin-that soul will be cut off from its people; he has broken My covenant."
