How do you calculate the average velocity?

Geology question... How to calculate minimum average velocity in km/myr?

  • Rocks found today in northern California, at latitude 40, have a magnetic inclination angle of -30. These rocks are 95 million years old. They arrived at their present location at 55 Ma ago. What was their minimum average velocity in km/myr? First, you have to find where the rocks were at 95 Ma from the inclination and then you have to get the distance from there to the present latitude. The velocity you get is a minimum since you have to assume that the rocks traveled the shortest distance between two lines of latitude. There are 111 km per degree of latitude. Thanks
