What is an earthquake?

Where to go during an earthquake? And what to do?

  • So I live in Bakersfield,California which is pretty close to the San Andreas Fault. If a big earthquake were to hit I'm sure we'd be hit. But how do I prepare for an earthquake? Our house is about 50 years old and although most say in an Earthquake to go under a table or somewhere. I'm afraid the roof of our house will collapse on us. Would it be safe to go outside in an earthquake, like not near any trees or stop lights? Also, wouldn't a fissure in the earth open? I'm sorry I'm just a bit paranoid.

  • Answer:

relax, that's the 1st rule. prepare a kit. have 4 gallons of water and some food. in an earthquake get out of the house into a grassy area away from glass and heavy things that may fall on you. trees are more rooted to the ground than homes but still stay clear just in case.
