Equation of plane question?

Graphing xyz plane equations? Please help me!?

  • So the original question was: The general equation of a plane is Ax + By + Cz = D, where A, B, C, and D are real numbers and A is nonnegative. Find the equation of the plane containing the points (3, 0, 0), (0, 8, 0), and (0, 0, 6). Show each step of your process. Then graph the plane. which the answer is (8,3,4) =24 How do I graph the "plane" of it, would I need more coordinates than just that one? I am confused. But the xyz graph is here: http://i39.tinypic.com/2hx4tao.jpg

  • Answer:

Finding the equation amounts to solving the three equations obtained by subsituting the three given points:      3A + 0B + 0C = D      0A + 8B + 0C = D      0A + 0B + 6C = D Which has infinitely many solutions, even with A non-negative! Pick any value for "A", then D=3A and B=D/8=3A/8 and C=D/6=A/2. {In view of B=3A/8, you might want to pick an "A" value divisible by 8.} Then given "answer" should be: A=8, B=3, C=4, and D=24. But, you were asked for the "equation", so substitution your A, B, C, and D, into:      Ax + By + Cz = D -------- As for the "drawing" the graph, I would suggest plotting the three given points (3,0,0), (0,8,0), and (0,0,6) on that grid you have, then connect them with straight lines to make a triangle. The triangle implies a plane in space. That is the best I can think of for trying to draw a picture (in 2 dimensions) of a plane in space.
