Is there a certain method used to analysis?

Statistics - Which method is best used to compare two sets of different data points w/ highest confidence?

  • I have a series of numbers (high, medium, and low) and want to compare another set of numbers which consist of a series of numbers (with the same attributes - high, medium and low). Which statistical method would best allow one to find out if the numbers (or relationships between the sets of numbers) are related the (with highest confidence, accuracy, etc)? I would like to understand if stock prices and the movements of price points from 1980 (Data A below) are related to stock prices from today in 2010 (Data B below). Which method should be used to calculate if the movements are closely related? For example: Data Set A (1980) contains: (A1) 100, 99, 96 (A2) 101, 100, 98 (A3) 103, 102. 100 ... Data Set B (2010) contains: (B1) 50, 48, 43 (B2) 52, 50, 43 (B3) 55, 51, 50 ... I am sure many different types of analysis can be done here. My goal is to know where I should focus my efforts to have high confidence that the movements contained in 2010 price moves mirror (or are nearly same) to say, 1980. If you have any additional information how I can best apply these theories (if you know of a software package or if Excel can be used) to apply these principles please let me know. Sincerely,

    I'm studying this right now and reading something on the IQR and variance. I don't know the answer. Do you know if it has anything to do with the IQR. In accounting, I think you can do horizontal analysis (Trend analysis) which measures how values change over time to see what your answer is. Have you tried taking a mean and comparing the means from the set to see what the average is?

The belief in god is real, whether one is christian, jewish, or muslim. God though, isn't real, so praying to "him" is about as useful as wishing on a star or asking your teddy bear for a magic bicycle. If the hijackers thought they had god on their shoulder telling them to destroy the WTC then they went to their demise happy, and if their victims found comfort in praying to their version of the same god in the hope they'd be in heaven before the devil knew they were dead then we can suppose they found some measure of comfort in that. Presumably there were rational thinkers on the planes too, who understood the inevitability of death and that no amount of magical thinking would change that. On at least one of the planes (UA93) was Todd Beamer and Thomas Burnett who in spite of their religious convictions didn't just sit and wait for heaven to happen, Neither did Jeremy Glick (jewish) or Mark Bingham (known otherwise as a gay rugby player). These four heroes attempted to salvage the situation after the hijack and you can be sure they weren't doing it for god. Trying to define the tragedy of the 9/11 flights as a struggle between differing beliefs in the same god is offensive when the reality is that there was a real human drama unfolding, with altruistic people doing their damnedest for their fellow man. The same could be said of the 343 NYC Firefighters lost that day, along with other first responders and countless other stories that will remain forever unknown. To pretend this was all about whose prayers were strongest is offensive beyond belief.
