How to calculate max/min scales on a scatter plot?

Algebra - is the Max and Min features of a TI-83 accurate local min and maxes?

  • I'm taking college algebra, our instructor tells us that we won't learn how to calculate the local min and local max of polynomial functions because it requires calculus (limits ect), but the TI-83 has a feature that can calculate the local max and local min of a graph. Does this feature just estimate the local mins and maxes, or are they in fact the local mins and maxes?

  • Answer:

Both. The calculator works by approximating the location of those maxes and mins - if they turn out to be nice numbers, then they will be, in fact, the actual values for min and max. If the actual min and max aren't nice (e.g. they're irrational numbers, like π or √2), then the calculator will only be able to give a decimal approximation (estimate).

They are in fact the local mins and maxes. But the calculator cannot displace exact value when it's irrational. So you'll see very very very close estimate in this case.
