Geometry word problem help?

Geometry word problems. Please help!?

  • This is the remaining problem that haven't yet answered in my previous questions. (search geometry word problems part I to see what is my purpose in asking these problems). This problem is from a book that I read, my sole purpose here is to know how to solve this problem for my incoming 3rd yr math that is geometry, for it is summer(vacation) here in the phils., I can clearly prove to you that this is not a homework problem. So please give this problem a shot, thanks! -------- If each edge of a cube is increased by 60%, then what is the % increase in each surface area? a)28% b)60% c)156% d)256%

  • Answer:

Since the linear dimensions (edges) are changing by 60%, an area measurement will change by 60% * 60% or 36%. Likewise the volume will change by 60%^3 because all 3 dimensions are changing by the same percentage.

I would use an example let's say a cube w/ side 10, and volume surface area 6*(10²)=600 With a 60% increase, the cube will have side of 10*16/10=16 The surface area of this cube is 6*16²=1536 The % increase from 600-->1536 =(1536-600)/600*100=936/600*100=156% The answer is c Another way to do it is algebraically. If the side of the cube is s, its surface area is 6s² w/ a 60% increase, the cube will have a side of 1.6s The surface area of this one is 6*(1.6s)²=15.36s² The percent increase from 6s²-->15.36s²=156%

Let the lengtth of the shortest base be x cm (base 1) So, the length of the other base is 2x cm (base 2) [according to the question] altitude is 4 cm area = 42 cm^2 area of a trapezoid is given by the formula area = altitude * (base 1 + base 2 ) * 1/2 Substituting in the formula 42 = 4 * (x + 2x) * 1/2 42 = 2 * 3x We can rewrite it as 2 * 3x = 42 3x = 42/2 3x = 21 x = 21/3 x = 7 Therefore, the shortest base is 7cm long ANSWER: (b) 7cm.
