Why is the sky red at night when it's snowing?

Explanation for flashes in night sky?

  • This past Summer, I spent a great amount of time observing the night sky. I live in an area where the light pollution is low enough so that I can see the majority of stars that are visible to the naked eye. On many nights, I observed flashes in the sky. Some were very distant and the flashes seemed no larger than a thumbnail held at arm's length. Others covered the entire night sky. They were all extremely brief, only fractions of a second, and they were all very faint but noticeable. There were absolutely no clouds in the sky when these observations occurred. These were just a few of some very odd spatial anomalies that I noticed. There were several other observations, such as distant flying objects moving in irregular patterns. It's amazing how much we fail to see in our skies.

commonly called 'heat lightning'....it's the light from flashes of lightning in storms far off, over your horizon..... you'll never hear their thunder, just see the flash of light.... it's especially noticable in summer, and if you live in mountain country, where the horizon is close ..... http://www.weatherquestions.com/What_is_heat_lightning.htm

Flashes in the night sky in summer are very common - they are the result of what some call "heat lightning", which is simply lightning visible from distant storms. It can be perfectly clear where you are, and a storm 80 km away will cause flashes in the sky above you. Distant flying objects moving in irregular patterns - you mean like aircraft or helicopters or military craft...
