Whats the purpose of nebulae?

A nebulae is the remains of a dead star - it's pretty much a soup of different gases and elements. This "soup" boils, and stars are born when a large enough column of gas ignites. Think of it as a tree in a rain forest or something. When the tree dies, squirrel and other small bugs begin to live inside the tree. Well the dust from the large dead star is what the new stars will be made of.

Its stuff is thee and me. All the ingredients that we find here on Earth, planets and the Sun come from the nebulae that were around, and still are, back about 5 billion years ago. [12 billion years ago or so was a slightly different story] Once nebulae begin collapsing, for one reason or another, these gigantic clouds -- not to be confussed with planetary nebulae -- fragment and form single or multiple star systems, which includes all the atoms we see today.
