Can someone explain what sailing is?

Can someone explain how solar sailing could work?

  • I was always confused on how solar sailing can be possible? I know it hasn't been perfected or anything yet, but can someone explain how solar sailing work? How does it reach space in the first place if it doesn't have a rocket propeller? Or what are the requirements are needed for actual space travel? Don't give me a link to wikipedia please, that page didn't really help me. Thank you.

    "Does work" the Japanese used a solar sail to move a satellite to Venus. Light has weight and is traveling really fast so it acts the same as wind on a surface. The sail is packaged along with the payload and launched into space atop a rocket. Once in space the sail is deployed and the solar wind/light emitted by the sun pushes on the sail. Same principal as a sail boat.

It does have a rocket to get up there. We send it up on a rocket, just like a satellite or space station, then it opens its sail once in space, orients itself, and the sail is bombarded by high-speed photons which cause it to move, just like the wind on earth throws particles into a sail to move a ship. Exact same concept, just different particles.

a solar sail on a spacecraft can only work in space. to get it into space, another method is preferable. but once in space, and the solar sail is unfurled, due to its low weight and immense surface area, it will catch the solar wind from the sun, and just...sail away. pretty much like a sailing ship...in space...and 3D? the saile are nessesarily very large because of the low forces impacted on it by the solar wind. and it wont go very fast...but the advantage is it will go on forever as long as there's solar wind to push it along...at least within the solar system.

Many objects in our solar system are pushed away from the sun by solar winds, and maybe a future spacecraft could harness the speed and strength of solar winds as a propulsion system.
