How much does music licensing cost?

  • I'm working on the budget for my friend's short film that he's doing for school and he wants to use the Happy Birthday song. I was just wondering how much it would cost to use it just once for a short scene. This film isn't going to be distributed in any way but my friend wants to do everything legitimately. Any help would be awesome.

  • Answer:

Happy birthday is own by warner chappell music. It is illegal to use it without their permission. Prices fort licensing vary depending on use. I suggest you contact them and explain your project, how much of it you are using in terms of length, is it a live cover of the song or are you using a prerecorded version from somewhere else. The fee will always vary on the project and use. If you have other questions you should contact a music consultant like jackdazey at jackdazey.com

Happy Birthday is in the public domain. That means anyone can sing it or record it. Usually a song is copyrighted for 50 years. After that period of time it becomes free and available for anyone to use. So you are good to go. Licensing of recent mainstream music can be VERY expensive. The licensing fee for a song by The Beatles, Michael Jackson,Dolly Parton,Black-Eyed Peas can cost up tp $200,000. for 20 seconds of play in a film.To use an entire song from beginning end would cost even more. That's why when you see lots of low-budget Indie movies the soundtracks are filled with musical nobodys-because they aren't famous and their songs are cheap.

My daughter is a professional trumpet player - does she need a license to play a song for a recording? If so how much is normal?
