How does the career of a director work?

Would Hollywood be generally more accepting Asians like me not as an actor but as a director and screenwriter?

  • I've always wanted to work as a Hollywood entertainer ever since I was a kid but my parents have, and they still are, discouraging my career for Hollywood. They tell me that Hollywood would not accept me because I'm Asian. And I understand that because there aren't very many Asian actors in Hollywood. I know how Asians are under-represented in this industry and Asian roles have often been White-washed for White actors and stereotypical. I don't know if Hollywood has any racist motives for this under-representation and lack of positive representation of Asians and "White-washing" Asian roles, OR if this under-representation is NOT a racist motive and that it's because there really is a "lack of marketable Asian actors because of the market demands" as they say. However I have no interest in acting. I want to work as a director and screenwriter and that's the only career I want and I don't want any other careers outside the entertainment industry. So even if Hollywood would not be as accepting to me as an actor who is an American-born Asian, would they accept me as American-born Asian director and screenwriter?

Don't let anything stop you from achieving you dreams. Who cares if Hollywood accepts you or not, a good director or screenwriter is not based on their skin color but their able to write or direct. Go for it!

Hollywood is a reflection of how society view different types of people. Asian actors do not appeal to the majority, unless they're martial arts experts. The audience cannot relate to lead actors who don't look like them, especially when they only make up a small percentage of America. And that's why white-washing occurs. I don't think it has much to do with racism. It's all about the demographics. Consider M. Night Shyamalan. An unknown writer/director with a weird name who made a hit movie (starring white people) early in his career. He became critically acclaimed and respected, until his movies started to suck. So it doesn't matter what you look like, if you're behind the camera, Hollywood only cares about one thing: if your idea can make money!
