Is it true that people from Philly are not very accepting of outsiders?

Why are people so accepting of movies that are so bad?

  • First of all, I am not going to say that movies today are all bad and that the only good movies are the ones from the 70s and all that, its like making the same argument that the only good music was from the back then too (so whoever makes that argument must have a fuzzy memory of disco or is just a highschooler bent on straying from the rest of the crowd to help with their low self esteem and father issues... oh wait I lost my train of thought)... OK now I remember. So, why are people so accepting of bad movies? Its been like this forever and I just can't understand it for the life of me. Look at one of my personal favorite films to rag about... Transformers 2! That movie made over 800 million dollars but was hands down one of the worst films I have ever seen. Yet I hear people praise this film like it was filmed by Christ himself! It had no plot, no likable characters and was nothing more than a 2 and a half hour car crash. Their are dozens of other movies that are just as terrible that people will flock behind and claim them as masterpieces as well, Twilight comes to mind (although the first one, while definitely not good wasn't THAT bad). Or Valentines Day, which was panned by critics but still people loved it. I had to sit through the movie Killers and I swear I think I would rather die than have to watch that sh*t a second time, their was no plot, the acting was putrid, and it wasn't at all funny. Yet that made 100 million box office, not a huge success but over its 70 mil budget. I know Hollywood can do better than this, I mean look at The Dark Knight, Inception (I'm a Christoper Nolan fan), Toy Story 3 (damn, Pixar made 3 movies and each one was better than 99.99% of every other movie ever made!), Juno, The King's Speech, The Town, The Wrestler, Slumdog Millionaire, The Hurt Locker, etc. all of which came out in the last couple of years. Yet sh*t like my much hated Transfomers 2 basically print money and gather a fanbase of small country. My only conclusion is that people are stupid. Stupid beings that have only the most minimal ideas of actual substance and would rather be bashed up by the head by the best special effects or the most attractive looking people than have a movie deeper than the water in a fish bowl.

  • Answer:

Because sometimes bad is good. I like to just be entertained sometimes, as I'm sure many do. I have a group of friends, very respected and famous in the industry (and involved with the films / type of films, you like), and we have a hoot sometimes sitting around watching movies like Dumb and Dumber. A classic. Don't be a movie snob, there's a place for all types of movies.

Some movies work as pieces of fun. Some movies need to be seriously well done to be appealing. Friday the 13th is seriously unintelligent, but people love them because they're fun. There Will Be Blood is intelligent. It needs to be otherwise it'll fall flat on its back. Transformers 2 isn't intelligent (and it doesn't have to be) but it shouldn't be that dumb, so it fails. Twilight should be more seriously dramatic when it is not, therefore it's considered to be mediocre. True, the Hollywood system has been in serious decline since the mid 90s. Modern audiences just don't have the sophistication to still be able to enjoy a story. They're more interested in special effects and cheap laughs. Anything artful like the works of people like Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia, Boogie Nights) turn people off since they aren't prepared to think/pay attention. It's sad, but that's how the world is now. If you want great movies from the modern era, you need to look for specific directors/writers who really do value their work, foreign cinema and the independent sector. There is still good stuff out there, it's just harder to find. Good directors of the modern era: Darren Aronofsky, Steven Soderbergh, Quentin Tarantino, Christohper Nolan, Paul Thomas Anderson, Tomas Alfredson, Alexander Payne Good foreign films: Amelie, Life Is Beautiful, Black Book, Oldboy, Let The Right One In Good independent films: Winter's Bone, About Schmidt, Sideways, Donnie Darko

Completely agree with you, have always wondered that myself. My friend thinks films like titanic or lord of the rings are awful yet she likes films like 'valentines day' or 'my super x-girlfriend'. Seriously don't know what goes on in that girl's head. However people have different opinions, some WILL, and evidently do, like these sort of films and that's their opinion leave them to it. Don't have to get all worked up over it - you can't change it! Like you said there are still some great films being made, *cough* the hobbit *cough*. Not all of them are terrible.

Maybe because they are dumb or because they think the opposite of what you think. Good=Bad Bad=Good Maybe=Maybe
