The Social Network and The Sociological Imagination.

The Social Network and The Sociological Imagination?

  • I have a Sociology paper in which I'm suppose to relate the movie The Social Network to C. Wright Mill's idea of the Sociological Imagination (which basically is a lens through which people can make sense of their individual lives in their broader social context). Obviously, Facebook is sort of a tool to achieve the Sociological Imagination because it allows people to connect to the rest of the world. But I need two pages, and I can only say that so many ways. I posted this in the Sociology section, but I'm not getting any answers. :( Help? PLEASE??? Thanks. :) Haha.

Well, it depends on how many sources your teacher is expecting, but try using everything you can. There's this really childish (but surprisingly sensible) cartoon rant on how Tom Anderson created everything you see before you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ba9UZSQwjx8 I say this because Tom Anderson created MySpace, a site notorious for young teens with glitter-graphic pages and poems and crap, trying to basically tell the world who they are, because that's how they want to be seen... When really, most of them just need a hug. They got older and moved on to Facebook, and generally, still post the same poetic crap trying to be emo, only they look more professional because FB doesn't allow customization. I'm not sure exactly if this answers your question, but you might waste a paragraph or two on the idea that young people create their own niche in their community of friends by creating a persona via the internet. It's been awhile since college.
