I can't put music on my iPhone.

I cant update my iphone?

I have an Iphone 4 that i havent updated in a long time. Im currently running 4.1 software. When i plug my phone into my computer, i can update but with a price. It tells me it will delete data and whatnot. What im truly worried about is all my music which was purchased via 3rd party websites. I cant import any of my music to my computer. My question(s) is/are 1. If i update, will my music be erased? 2. If so, how can i put this music from my phone to my computer since regular importing doesnt work?
