Can't afford film school, looking for some alternatives, can anyone help me out?
-
Like lots of people at the moment, I can't afford to jump right into a film school. I have my mind set on Directing and Film production, so I came here to ask for some information that will help me in the career I want to pursue. My first question, are there any websites that offer previously recorded lectures on film and cinematography? Second, are there any books in particular that I should try to get my hands on? If anyone could help me out with some links to where I might be able to find some of the information I'm looking for, that would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Answer:
The digital age is making it much easier for up and coming film makers. Hollywood is full of red tape, focus groups, greedy execs, and, to be honest, sub-par actors. By the time you are ready to make a film, equipment should be affordable. Find crew/cast members that are passionate about your project and willing to work cheap. Watch and read interviews of your favorite directors. Become film-obsessed and really studyhe history of cinema. These reference points will come in handy when writing/shooting. Do it yourself. There is no reason to deal with major studios anymore, unless you need a 100 million dollar plus budget. Film school is a good idea, but go to NYC, not Los Angeles. NYC is much more art/technique focused. Don't get wrapped up in the money game.
