School options other than public..?
-
I came across a closed question and really want to respond.. I hope this finds its way to the struggling young girl. She was asking what other options were there besides public school because she was being bullied. She was struggling with depressions and other issues because of it. She had already tried home-school on line and got behind in Math. I would first like to say that some comments left had me sadden and frustrated. Telling this child who has taken it upon herself to find better and healthier options (a parents job) to suck it up and go back to public school really floored me. These are the years where children, who will be adults in our society, learn self-esteem, confidence and an education to function well in life. No, I was never bullied in school, but it is so heart breaking when you read about children who are so badly bullied that they think the only option is is to end their young lives. Suck it up! Really! That's your answer!?... Appalling How about our school system develop a no tolerance AND follow through? If a child is seen bullying set up sessions with the counselor (it's part of their job) and if it continues then the child is out, to a different school or home-school. What is more troubleing is that most (not all) of the kids that are bullying are being mistreated at home or another area in their life. So, to all parents IT'S UP TO US! I have an 11 yr old boy and he and other friend was laughing be hide one kids back about hurtful feelings he was showing. I found out by reading the text messages in his phone. NO, this is not invading privacy! 11 yr olds do not have complete privacy! Parents it's up to us! Needless to say we talked to him for about an hour on bullying and putting the shoe on the other foot situations. Along with that he was grounded from friends, phone and computer. And yes a spanking. I know a lot of you will disagree with spanking and feel there is no need for it, but this was a serious situation that could have turned worse over the years. I talk about it all the time not just with this one incident. Parent, It's up to us! It happened when he was 10 and he is now a couple months til 12 and I can say he is now the one standing up for kids that are being picked on at school. And it all started by me reading his text messages. Parents it's up to us! He also has a Face book that I have the password to and yes, I read those to. It's up to us! As far as him having a cell phone and facebook, no, I do not approve but his father (we are divorced) didn't agree. Don't get me wrong, he is a great father and and our son is our #1 priority no matter what issues we have between us. IT STAYS BEWTEEN US. We have a strong united front when it comes to our sons morals, ethics and behavior. Parents, It's up to us! Sorry for rambling and getting off track, but i felt that that needed to be said. To the young girl about school options. I really hope that you didn't take the comments left to heart or the ugly ones that will be left on here. I know you said that you tried home-schooling and didn't like it. I'm not sure if it was just getting be hide in Math or the lack of being with GOOD kids your age. I only have one suggestion for you, and yes, it is a home-school. But hear me out. It's called k-12, just google it. It is a public home-schooling. You pay for nothing because it's 'public school'. They send you computer, printer, text books ect.. everything you need for the year your in. They have teacher's on-line via camera that teaches classes and a number to call with any questions (if i'm not mistaken it's 24 hours) They have gatherings of kids in the area you live in to get together meet each other go on trips and talk about pros and cons of life. It is a true diploma that you receive and you get a graduation ceremony with others that are graduating. I'm sure it's not going to be a high school size classes. But weighting pros and cons it is a great options for some. Remember that you have to be motivated everyday to stay on course to get the work done. I really hope you have/will find something that will grow your confidence and self-esteem and let your personality blossom true to who you are. To the parents reading this, there are amazing moms and dads out there and I know that it is impossible to know what your child is doing or how their acting every minute of the day, but that just means we have to go the extra mile to talk and learn and develop our children the right way. There are so many influences out there that could turn them wrong. Parents, It's up to us.

Finally, another parent who gets it!!! It IS up to us- my 9 year old's teachers are always floored because we are so willing to get involved in his behavior-apparently parents that actually do something about their children's behavior is rare, and that is a sad state of things. To the young girl, you might also check out charter schools in your area- best of luck to you!
