What is Prom exactly?

What are the social norms for Prom/ high school dances in general?

• Okay, so I am a high school junior male, and I have never gone to any high school dances because I figured I would not like them/ find them boring. However, Prom is coming up, and I am thinking about going to it just because I am somewhat missing out on the high school experience by not going to high school dances. However, since I have not gone to any of those, I'm not sure as to what exactly the social norms are for such experiences. Some examples of questions I have are, "Should I go with a person of the opposite sex?" "Is it okay to bring someone from the opposite sex as a friend and not necessarily as a date?" "How formal do I need to dress up for Prom?" "What exactly does one do at Prom?" "Is it normal to bring groups of friends to Prom, or do people just come as couples?" "Is it okay to come there as a couple and not with a group of friends?" etc. If anyone can shed some light on those issues as well as tell me some general things about Prom, I would appreciate it.

  yes go as a couple with someone with the opposite sex. I suppose some people are renting limos or party buses to get to/from the place of the dance so its good to get on one with all your friends and their dates. Talk to you friends about what they are wearing but people generally rent a tux which costs about $100. At the dance people will be dancing of course, probably freak dancing, and after people will go to parties hosted by student at your school were there will be a lot of drinking and possible weed. Also i brought a girl just as a friend as not necessarily a date and it was okay.
