Programs / Internships for high school-ers in colleges during the school year?
-
I'm 15 and I'm a freshman in high school. I would like to either take some classes, offered by colleges and/or universities, during the school year since I go away during the summer and cannot take any of the courses (classes, seminars, lectures, etc) offered during the summer at said colleges and/or universities. If it helps, I plan on majoring in either law, journalism or architecture and am also interested in policy-making, international relations, politics and literature in addition to the aforementioned majors of law, journalism and architecture. I would also love to intern somewhere (for example, for a newspaper, a law firm, a Senator, a Congressman, etc). I live in Boston and, therefore, can only take courses offered at colleges and/or universities in the Boston area, as well as internships in the Boston area.

If you are talking about taking actual college courses, usually only juniors and seniors are allowed to do that. Some colleges offer summer programs for high school students, but I haven't seen any such programs offered during the school year. I think they assume that high school students are busy with high school classes and extracurricular activities during the school year. Usually only nonprofit organizations can offer unpaid internships without getting into legal difficult. Once you are a junior or senior, you can find out if any of the many colleges in the Boston area will allow you to take an evening or weekend class there. You can also look for ways to volunteer (to intern) for a government or other nonprofit organization.
