How did you get into an ivy league school?

How do I get into Harvard (or any Ivy League School) as a freshman in high school, almost a sophomore?

  • I go to a private high school and at the beginning of freshman year I was motivated and was in all CP classes. I did really good the first quarter, about a 3.5 GPA ( I know that's not good , but it is to the rest of the year. Then I asked to go in all honors classes and my guidance consular said no, so then I stopped trying 2-3 quarters getting about a 3.0 GPA. I played football, basketball, and now playing baseball. Next year i'm playing golf , and then all extracurricular activities, math team, debate team, and a few others. Now 4th quarter I'm doing really well like a 3.8-3.9 GPA. So if I take all honors classes in sophomore year ( the highest classes you can take as a sophomore). And get a 4.0 GPA , unweighted, and then junior and senior I take all AP classes getting a 4.0 , unweighted, what do you think my chances are if I also maintain sports and extracurricular activities? Thanks for your responses!

  • Answer:

a 3.0 GPA is bad if you are wanting to get into an Ivy League college no offense. You're only in Grade 10 so you have to realize that Grade 10 is half as hard as next year is going to be. I have decided that I am going to Harvard Business school but I have a 97% in math 20 AP right now so I kind of have something to show for it. So yes ... IF you get a 4.0 GPA you have a good chance. I'm pretty sure they don't care about sports half as much as work experience and volunteering. That's why I trade stocks and volunteer at the hospital.

If you graduate as your class Valedictorian, and you are recognized for academic excellence, you may have a shot.

(almost) Everyone will have great grades, AP classes, sports or traditional volunteer positions. If you do the same nothing about you will stand out. You're doing a great job by knowing what you want early. For the next 3 years you need nothing less than an A, you need to pick a cause related to the degree you want or cause you can relate to and devote time to creating an organization related to that. Keep taps on every dollar your raise or people who also volunteer because of you. You can pick homeless veteran or women's domestic violence center and you could use coupons to get free or nearly free items (solicit them from parents of other students/recycling center) to donate food to a shelter that supports them. You could sell muffins to raise money to send a foreign child to school. You could also pick a cause and get your entire class to support the cause.
