Views of the American schooling system (academic-wise)?
-
Well I've noticed a lot about our schooling system.. what do you personally think about it? and please let me know if you see what I am noticing as well.. because I don't know if it is just me.. - US History is emphasized way too much, in comparison to world history. I must have taken US history three years already, not including the common study of it in the later years of elementary school. In addition, it just seems like it is repeating! But that also might be because I moved across the US in middle school to a less-advanced schooling system. World History, on the other hand, seems to me that it is only taught like 1 or 2 years throughout my entire student career.. covering each area vaguely. - It seems that you learn things at such a slow pace in Elementary School.. and in High School, the pace is just much too rapid to be controlled. In 2nd grade, I remember that some of my spelling words were composed either one or two letters.... words I could spell when I was 2 (By the way, isn't it better when people learn to read before they enter school?) It generally just wasn't challenging at all. I mean people were throwing around ideas of negative numbers and square roots way before we even learned them.. I don't understand why we couldn't have learned more in Elementary School (and 6th grade.. maybe 7th) Instead of throwing everything in during high school, making everything much harder! - Foreign language learning happens way too late... I mean in some school districts, they start as late as the 9th grade. I mean seriously, wouldn't it be easier on kids to learn it in elementary school? - English has too large of a focus. It's the only class we are required to take 4 years in high school. Shouldn't everyone already be fluent in English? The only times most people ever have to use advanced vocabulary and such is if they are enrolled in High School or College English classes.. When else would a person in any career use such language anyways? or write essays? Unless maybe they are an author. The only time I personally instill such effort in my writing composition is when it is graded or simply important (resumes, applications, etc.) Barely anyone cares when they casually type on the computer. In addition, why must we read works of literature that simply cannot be understood (by 99.9% of the English speaking population that is) and are written in such an archaic form of English (e.g. Shakespeare)? I do not understand how this helps anyone at all, can someone please enlighten me? Thanks for hearing my long rant.. Please tell me what you have noticed (academically) about the US schooling system and if you have any comments on what I said.

I love this topic. Quite frankly I think the American schooling system is broken. But unfortunately I don't have the patience to write out why I think that is. To sum it all up, if you live in a small middle of American town, you can probably get a decent education. However you will be completely unprepared for College. But if you live in any of the major metropolitan areas across the country, your chances at a good education will depend upon your family's level of income or proximity to good schools. And you most likely will be OK when you get to College. You're wrong about the English though. Have you spoken to any of the youth of this country? Seen how children compose sentences on Youtube, Facebook, or on their cell phones? If anything, people are losing the ability to communicate correctly. And to be honest, all those years I spent in school prior to college learning English, did absolutely nothing for me when I had to write research papers in college. I don't think I really understood "English" until I took a college course in "English". The whole point about writing papers and studying English wasn't so you can write an essay. You're right, only writers will ever use that skill. The point of studying English was so that when ever you needed to, you can clearly and easily communicate an idea to someone else. Have you ever spoken to someone who was obviously American, and went to American schools just like you did, but for some reason you can't understand a damn thing they are saying? Yeah they obviously missed the point of English class too.
"why must we read works of literature that simply cannot be understood (by 99.9% of the English speaking population that is" You are joking? Most English speakers (native or otherwise) can understand Shakespeare. It is written in English. What do I think of the US education system - well to go to uni inm Europe you need 3-5 AP classes or an IB. AN IB is considered the average HS diploma in Europe so I'd say US education is poor
