Career help medical/business?

Career choice, Junior in High school deeply confused. Help?

  • Is there any career that has to do with giving advice/communicating/ helping other people out through communication. Or career that has to do with deep thoughts/communication. Personally, I believe you need to be interested in what you want to do in the future and love what it is, than people forcing you, telling you where to go and what to be and such, because life is going to end up being boring if you're don't love what you do as a career. Pretty much 80% of my whole family is on the medical line, though I am not saying that's a bad thing, but they're all telling me to be an LPN, Nurse, Doctor and all that crap I really am not interested in. I find myself to be the kind of person that think extremely deeply into things, even a little situation and I'm pretty thoughtful of other people's feelings, more than an average person I guess. So is there any career out that that has to do with psychological communication/therapy or helping people out, in a gentle environment if possible. I'm currently a junior in High school and I am deeply confused on what to choose as my career, though I understand the fact that it might be a little too early by thinking of what I want my career to be at my level, but all I want is to have a career that I have complete interest in and that I love and would want to go to sleep and just cant wait for the next day of work to come. If there are, is there any improvement in it and how is the career anticipated to grow in the next few years so I would know what's ahead of me. Thx a lot in advance :)

You could be a Licensed Social Worker (LCSW), Psychologist, or Psychiatrist. Those seem to be the types of things you're talking about. All three counsel people, althought the psychiatrist is more concerned with prescribing medications and that line of work requires medical school. These fields are in demand currently. You can get more info on each from the Occupational Outlook Handbook at http://www.bls.gov/OCO/. It's really cool that you are such a deep thinker. Don't worry about choosing a career yet, though! It's good to have direction, but people change their minds all the time and there is nothing wrong with that.

Wow. Tons of people come on here asking for help with their career choice, but very rarely is the answer as clear and easy as this case. You're describing social work to a t. With a Masters in Social Work, you'll be able to work as a counsellor in lots of different sub-areas. Personal, family, addiction, etc.. Everything you described above fits with this.

Get a job at a day care center in the evenings or during the summer. This will help you decide if in fact you want to work with children. Be a volunteer at a school with children and see if you really want this. If you do, go to school for education, early child care. If you continue and get a masters +30, the pay will be better. Remember this, you will be working for many years. Make sure you get a position that you enjoy. So many people are miserable at work because they are in jobs that pay good but the work sucks. I teach adults, am paid well, and love it.
