What do you major in to become a teacher?

What degree/major is needed to become a middle/high school teacher (good schools too)?

  • Answer:

To be a high school teacher, you it probably will depend on the subject you want to teach. So if you want to teach Math, you should major in Math, and then either double major or minor in Secondary education. :)

well the best route is to get a math degree, then get a teachers certificate. there is a program now that is available where people with regular degrees(such as math or geography) can take like a 3 month crash course and become certified to teach. I think thats the best route because quite frankly alot of stuff in the education degrees is garbage, hence one reason are school system is so bad today. not only will you be better educated that way, but it will give you better opportunities in other Fields if you decide to get a summer job or take a break from teaching. if you need more help, feel free to contact me

You'll need a bachelor's degree, with a dual major in education and mathematics, for starters. Getting a master's degree will entitle you to a higher salary, which may be a plus or minus depending on the needs and budget of the school systems you apply to teach in.
