What is an "open campus" high school?

High school kid living on college campus?

  • I am a junior college student and live in the apartment close to the campus. My family is kind of broke and I am finally having my chance to go to college after a few years of intermission after high school to work to help my mother. My mother is financially, in the difficult situation and I am considering to have my younger brother, high school freshman to live with me in the apartment. Here we have a really good high school across the street- right next to CU campus, near my apartment and everything. He can go there and same time, experience college life while being near me. It might excite him to study hard and go to a good college. But same time, I am concerned how it would affect him to be near a big college campus- all the partying and things. I will be busy all the time and mainly, he will be on his own. Plus, he will be away from his mother. It is nearly 2 hour drive to mom's house. They could meet only during holidays and some weekends. Is there any reason not to have a kid on college campus that I am not aware of? Would it affect him in any way negatively to live close to a big University? What I am thinking is that here he will have a better academic opportunities and cool, new, intellectually-stimulating environment that will help him more than if he stayed with the mother who barely knows anything about schooling and young kid's social needs. Any thoughts and experience, please.

  • Answer:

My only thought is that there must be a lot of other high school young people in this area so close to the college campus so I see no reason why your brother would have a problem living in that area. My only concern is that you say you will be busy all the time. Will you be able to give your brother the supervision that a high school boy needs? Give this some serious thought before deciding.
