How would I become an EMT?

How can I become an EMT?

  • I've always been interested in becoming an EMT. Do I need to go to my local community college and get a certificate before landing an entry-level job as an EMT?? Which means I'd spend 6 months on becoming certified. Is there sleep pay involved for those who work 24 hr shifts or are those rare in the industry? Thanks

I'm glad your interested, it's a very rewarding career! Yes, you will need to find a local Fire Station or Community College offering the EMT course. In most places, it's a 6 month (1 semester) source offering 10 college credit hours. If you get lucky you may find an accelerated course somewhere. Yes, there is TONS of sleep pay involved. I work 12 hour shifts for a rural Ambulance service. I have lil "pittely" jobs I have to do, which usually only takes 20 mins. Then I can do whatever I want, within city limits. Which includes sleeping :) You need to make sure your in good cardiac health though. Running does amazing things to your body, and beefs up your heart like you wouldn't believe. When it's 3 am and your sound asleep and that tone goes off, adrenaline shoots through your body and it could overload your heart if it's not in good shape. The number 1 killer of emergency workers is heart attacks.

I recommend you see what the local colleges have to offer, you can do an exelerated course in a quarter, but you will have to be certified and pass the national registry test, which is challenging. You can do it though. I recommend working in an emergency room as en er tech, the pay is better for the most part, and you will work consistent 12 hour shifts. 24 hour shifts for emts at least in central cali are rare. Best of luck to you!
