What is it like to teach high school English?

Can I teach high school English in Florida with a Master's degree?

  • I currently hold a bachelor's degree in English Literature. Next year I will begin graduate school to ultimately obtain a PhD in English Literature. My original goal was to continue on with research and fellowships etc. to become a university professor. However, while I am doing that (takes a long time to make any money until you become tenured), I want to teach at the high school level here in Florida once I have finished graduate school, or while I'm in graduate school. Can I teach without any degree in Education? I'll have experience as a TA and will have my bachelor's still. I don't really want to have to go back and get another degree in Education as well... Short question: What is the easiest route for me to begin teaching high school English in Florida when currently I have a bachelor's degree in English Literature (working towards a master's or PhD)?

  • Answer:

You MUST be a certified teacher. It varies from state to state but in Florida you must have completed a Teacher Education Program. Here's the link : http://www.fldoe.org/edcert/ Hope that helps!
