What does it take to skip a grade in school?

Can I skip 8th grade and how?

  • Now I've looked into this a little bit and the two things I've heard that are problems are people are either not academically or socially ready. I already hang out with highschoolers and kids in the grade I'd be moving into. So socially I am fine. Academically is where I'm iffy. I'm in 7th grade and take Algebra A, the 8th graders take Algebra 1 but at the high school I'm going to they offer algebra 1 go i'd still take that. I excel in english and am not really worried about that. French I take half a year and if I do skip a grade plan to take the other half of the year because the highschool only offers French 2. In 8th grade you learn American History, and looking at some of my 8th grade friends tests, I know most of the material but would be willing to take a summer course with the French. The one thing I'm iffy about is Science. I am advanced and don't have any trouble with it. I'm just worried I'm missing Physical science (what 8th grade science) I live in California (near San Francisco) I really don't like my school and honestly think I could skip 8th grade and don't mind taking summer classes to do it. I'm just wondering the steps I have to take to do it. Do I contact the middle school (my school) or the high school? And what would I need to do to qualify

  • Answer:

I'm not from the US either and where I am, skipping 8th grade could be a little difficult. If you think that you're prepared to make the effort to skip a grade this late, then it should be alright. Just know that you will have to put in a lot of work to stay on top of things. Like i said, I don't know much about the US, but here, 9th grade is quite different to 8th grade, so it would be difficult for someone new to high school to skip straight to a more senior course. All in all, it's really up to you. If you don't feel comfortable where you are and you're prepared to make the commitment, I say go ahead :)

Hi, I'm not from the US but if you think you could skip a grade talk to one of your teachers about it. If anyone knows the answer or how you could find the answer it'll be them. Plus they'll know better than you if you are ready.

I skipped 9th. I'd honestly finish off middle school because the younger grades have tougher requirements to let you skip it. In high school for me, it was a matter of passing the final to all grade 9 course with an 85 or above
