Can i get my permit like this?

I'm 16, not in school, too young for GED classes, I have my permit but can I get my drivers license?

  • Okay, this is sort of a long story so please bear with me. I'm 16 and I live in Alabama my schooling is a really really long story but I pretty much stopped going in when I was 13 & I tried to go back this year but the principle told me that he couldn't accept me because I was already 16 and that was too old "The best thing for you to do is drop out right now and get your GED" that's what he told me. I'm planning on going to GED classes but I have to be 18 to go. In September I got my permit but I gave them a form that my mom was supposed to turn in when I started going to school but she didn't because they wouldn't accept me, so the lady at the court house told me that it wasn't the right form but she would let it slide this time so I took the permit test & passed=) but this March will be 6 months since then & I will be able to go back & take the rode test but I'm only 16 even though I have my permit I will still need proof of school but they wouldn't let me go to school & I'm to young to take GED classes, will I be able to get my driver's license or am i screwed until I can take GED classes?

    I think... you're screwed. Alabama Department of Public Safety's website lists one of the requirements for anyone under 18 is "Acceptable school enrollment form or proof of graduation". :/

Yeah, you can definitely get your license. They can't keep you from having you're license just because you cant go to school.

Going to school and getting your license has nothing to do with each other. Each state has different rules as to when you get a drivers license, age wise, and when you can actually drive alone. Check your manual to see. (It probably will be on the written test anyway).

Yes you can get your license. However, about school. They cannot keep you from going to public school. Your mom needs to go to the Board of Education and fight for your right to an education. You will not have much of a life whether you have a drivers license or not if you don't have an education. I too was a drop out and am now retired. How I wish I had done as the others did and hang in there and finish school. I am smart and talented and could have had a much better life. I had a family and had to work two and sometimes three jobs to just keep them fed and a roof over heir heads. I was always scared and sometimes had to go on welfare and food stamps. My husband died and I was alone and my kids had only me to take care of them. Because of my lack of education I couldn't get a high paying job so had to take several low paying ones. I didn't get to be much of a parent to my kids because I had to work all the time. I am retired now and have very little to live on. If I had had a good job I would have had a pension. Please do this for yourself and for your future family if you should have one. Think about the kind of life you want to life and make a list of the steps it will take to get you there. You are at a point in your life where you can change your direction and make a beautiful future and have a wonderful life. Please don't waste it.

Sorry, but you probably won't be able to get it until you're 18. I live in Georgia and here, if you're not in school, you can't get your license until you're 18.
