Which UC schools should I apply to?

UC schools VS Cal State schools. Which ones are better?

  • Answer:

UC schools are generally regarded as better schools (they have better professors, etc.). However, that doesn't mean Cal State schools are bad. In fact, I might say that Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (regarded as the best Cal State school) is better than the not-as-good UCs.

In general, UC schools are better because they get more money from the State (larger schools focused on research). Cal States are very good school as well as they have been catching up and even passing some UC schools. Cal States do research as well but mostly hands on learning. It depends what you are studying. For example, many UC's don't have a college of businesses rather a college of economics. Cal States on the other hand would have a college of businesses. Side note: many Cal States (SDSU, Cal Poly...) are harder to get into than UC schools.

I have attended both. It is much more difficult to get into a UC school than a state school, and they have MUCH better reputations. The only exception is that some state schools have excellent reputations for a specific major i.e. Northridge for business
