What does an English major do?

  • Answer:

Usually a English major is planning to do something that involves writing. We go into law, publishing, script writing, or sometimes teaching. But you have to pick up education credits. We study famous writers in a more extensive form, we work on all form of writing like poetry, etc. I recently wrote a screen play which I am shooting for an hour long movie. ( I hope) I selected my major Junior year. A English major has little to do with just the spoken word. It's fun if you like to express yourself in words. The complete title is English Language and Compostion.

Read a lot and write a lot. If you want to become an English teacher you would major in English, but you'll also need to take teaching classes as well. You can start to major in English your freshman year. They study literature, the immense history of the language, and how to write properly. Those that plan on going into teaching would also take courses designed to help facilitate classroom discussion, grading and teaching techniques, and just how to be a good teacher overall. Just because English is a person's native language doesn't mean he or she is good at it automatically or that there is nothing to learn. English majors have a lot of work reading novels and writing a ton of essays.
