What Is Homework?

What's your opinion on on School and Homework?

  • (if you don't want to read all this skip it, but then i wont read yours) I'm just wondering what everyone thinks about it. I'm in 10th grade. What I hate about schools is how early High Schoolers have to get up for the bus, but what I hate most is Homework, like every other kid. I think it's pointless because it takes up time. I'd rather spend that time studying than doing homework. Teachers say that we learn from doing homework but they don't realize that some of us just get the answers from someone else or look for the answers online. Instead of spending 2 hours on a packet they only spend half an hour because they are just looking through a textbook instead of answering the questions themselves. You don't learn that way. I do, do my homework most of the time. But because of the times I didn't do it, my grades went down. Homework shouldn't count towards your final grade since it has nothing to do with your education. Sure you may get an A on a hw assignment, but all you did was get the answers from a textbook. The only thing that should count is Tests. I'd rather have more of those than HW.

When it comes to waking up early, I don't know the exact reason but I have to think the major reason is bussing schedules. The school districts have to work out a bus schedule so that all the busses are available to high school, middle school, and elementary schools at separate times. On top of that the early start and release helps when it comes to students have siblings to watch after school, jobs, and sports. While I understand how you feel about your homework, and I do believe that some teachers assign "busy" work rather than useful work, homework is suppose reinforce what you are learning in the classroom. It's supposed to help you study, and most of the times you should be able to use your homework assignments to help study for tests. All I can say is get used to homework because when you get to college you will be swamped with studying/homework. High school is easier in the sense that teachers are usually lax on their rules, especially when it comes to due dates. In college it's mostly your responsibility and when the professor says no late assignments accepted, they mean NO late assignments accepted. When they say no makeup tests will be given, they mean NO makeups will be give unless the excuse is death in the family or hospitalization. Most students in college will agree that they were poorly prepared for college in high school.

I am a High School English teacher. I give homework every night--5 days a week including holidays. During vacation times, like Christmas, Winter Recess and Easter, I assign reports and projects which are due at the time class resumes. Homework is a learning tool for students and an assessment tool for teachers. We are well aware that students copy from one another and can usually identify these students easily. In fact, my policy is that if you shared the work, you can share the grade, each participant getting only a fraction of the credit that should have been given had the assignment been done correctly. Finding that a student copied the work from an online source begets no credit. There are numerous ways to identify answers that have been taken from the internet and plagerized. Homework is not given as busy work; it is given to reinforce the days lesson and to advise the teacher if there is a problem--something you did not understand and may need reinforcement to achieve the desired outcome of the lesson. Homework needs to be graded and counted toward your final grade. Homework has EVERYTHING to do with education. You learn by reinforcement; you advise the instructor if you do not understand something and need more clarification. This is an important evaluation and assessment tool. In my class, Homework counts as 25% of your grade for each marking period which at the end of the semester is averaged by the 3 marking periods. Do your homework. It will help you learn and it will help your teacher help you to understand the work/content better and help your teacher to prepare bretter lessons based on student needs.

I'm a high school senior, and I both agree and disagree with your opinion there. As much as we all hate homework, i mean come on its not like its fun or anything, it does help you learn most of the time. Some teachers do assign busy work which is stupid, but most of the time its not. Like for english you may read a book then have to answer questions for homework to help you understand the story better. For math you have to do problems to get practice. So obviously teachers are going to count homework as part of your grade since it helps. It also teaches you time management which is important when you're taking higher level classes. I think homework should be given in only small amounts though. While most teachers understand we get lots of homework, some don't and think their class is our only one. Ive had 5 hours of homework a night before which is WAY too much. You should never have more than an hour of homework, because then you won't concentrate because you'll be too tired. And the English teacher who said homework over vacations? thats ridiculous. Its supposed to be a vacation, i don't want to have to do pointless reports. Yet theres always that one teacher who gives a project during vacation. So thats why homework is important. BUT in small amounts. Maybe it's just your teachers that don't give meaningful homework.
