Applying to a Canadian college?

Question about transferring from community college to four year and then applying to..?

  • Here is my situation so far. I'm a year in community college with all As and will spend another semester there at least where I'll most likely get more As. I am planning on transferring to a four year college where I will take two years doing all my pre requirement sciences for pharmacy and/or med school. Will my grades from community college have any impact when applying to the pharm/med schools, or am I pretty much just starting all over without a cushion for my overall GPA and only being able to rely on the grades from the college I transfer to?

  • Answer:

It depends on the school that you are applying to and what community college classes you took. Some pharmacy/medical schools do not give pre-requisite credit for certain community college classes (mainly sciences) and thus those classes will not count into the GPA calculation. The school I ended up applying to did not even take into consideration overall GPA and only calculated the overall GPA for their required pre-requisites, so it didn't even matter if I took some easy cushion classes in undergrad. Others may take your overall GPA into consideration. Also, universities themselves have different policies about transfer credit. The university I attended simply gave credit for the course, but no actual grade points to be calculated into the GPA calculation, for transferred credit. Others have different transfer credit policies.
