Is an Academy more expensive than normal school?

Does it make more sense to attend the Air Force Academy or a civilian school?

  • I would like to become a physician for the Air Force and recently received an appointment to the Air Force Academy. I have already completed a year of college so accepting the appointment would mean throwing that year away. My other option is to continue attending my civilian school and then apply for the HFSP scholarship to pay for Med school. I know I want to be in the Air Force but for how long im not certain. The Academy would incur an extra 5 year commitment as well as the 4 year commitment for Med school. I know the Academy is very prestigious but it is also very difficult and an extra 5 years is a big commitment. Im just wondering what some other people feel the pros and cons of each path would be? Im worried I may not have the burning desire to be at the Academy that it takes to be successful there and that it may ruin my chances for getting into Medical school.
