How to solve perpendicular equation when only given one equation and no points?

  • the question is... line A is perpendicular to the line with the equation y=-1/3x and the point is on line A. what is the equation of line A? my book says the answer is y=3x-22 I am baffled as to how they got this answer, without a given point. Is there a typo in the question, or is there a way to get that answer without given coordinates?

In your case, line A is perpendicular. the slope for the reference line is y = - 1/3x. the opposite reciprocal slope for y = -1/3 x is y = +3/1 x. +3/1 is simplified to 3. That is how the y=3x is created for the reference line. The reference line will be angled from left to right. The perpendicular line will be angled from right to left. I don't know how the authors, editors, or printing company of your book found -22.
