What do you do with the food you make in culinary school?

What traditional French food would be a good choice to make for a middle school project?

  • I have been assigned a report by my french teacher, Madame Britnell, to prepare a traditional french food by Monday, March 8th. I am working with two other girls in my 7th grade class, and we have no idea what to cook! Together, we can probably come up with about 50 dollars for ingredients. We aren't exactly experienced chefs, so please keep it pretty simple. I already know how to make french fries and crepes, so I would appreciate more original responses. Thank you for your time!

  • Answer:

LOL "French" fries aren't French. Neither is French dressing. Try Chocolate Mousse. You can make it ahead and put it in the refrigerator. It's pretty inexpensive. I'd get some plastic Dixie cups and make individual servings for your class OR make one big one and take Dixie cups to serve it. Here's the recipe: http://www.francethisway.com/mousseauchocolat.php

Coq au Vin or chicken with wine is super easy and delicious. You'll just need someone to buy you the wine. If you can do dessert, try a tiramisu or a creme brule.

The possibilities are endless! Here are a few ideas, though. They should be fairly easy to make and transport. If you've made crepes before, I think you should be fine making these dishes. -French Onion Soup (lots of variations on this, you can add bread and cheese with Gruyere, ect.) Very tasty, but it is a soup, so if you don't want something sloshy, this probably isn't the best recipe. -Quiche Lorraine, Quiche Alsatian (also lots of variations of quiches, but man, are these things good. Seriously, they're easy, delicious, and every kid in your class will love them. Unless they don't like eggs, in which case these omelette-like quiches would not be good. My personal favorite.) -Any salad with basic European ingredients with croutons (olive-oil and garlic fried bread cubes) will serve as an excellent side dish. (with quiche! Just kidding. But do check out those quiches, for real.) One French Onion Recipe: http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/french_onion_soup/ (This recipe calls for wine, don't add it in this recipe or in any other French Onion soup recipe.) One Quiche Recipe: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Quiche-Lorraine-I/Detail.aspx One Crouton Recipe: http://www.france-property-and-information.com/crouton-recipe.htm Quiches originated from Germany, but are now a classic French dish.

If you mean French Canadian, I would go with a tourtiere. Is cheap to make and fairly easy. Just look up a recipe online.
