How do I write a research paper?

  • I'm in my second semester of college and I have to write a 5 page research paper on abortion. This is the first research paper I ever had to do and I'm not too sure what to do! I'm panicking! Am I supposed to write about my own opinion on abortion? Or am I just supposed to write about abortion without throwing my opinion in? The most confusing part for me is the "work cited" page! How do I make one and what exactly am I supposed to put on it? And is the work cited page the same as a bibliography? If not, then am I supposed to make a work cited AND bibliography? I don't know how to make a bibliography either lol. Anyway, tips and examples would be GREAT! Any help will be greatly appreciated! And if anyone is going to link me to another website can you PLEASE help me in your own words as much as possible before linking me to a website.

    works cited = bibliography I think works cited is just the politically correct way of saying bibliography or something like that. If you don't know how to do it, use a website like easybib.com or knightcite.com it allows you to plug in your sources' information and generates a bibliography/works cited for you. You can write without forming an opinion of your own, but make sure you have a thesis even if it doesn't take a side. Make sure you do research on both sides of the abortion debate, though. This is pretty much the same thing as writing an essay, but with a lot more research, analysis, and writing.

Basically, your paper should start with an intro (about 3/4 of a page). In this intro, you approach your topic and give a little background. Then, state your thesis and give a preview of your arguments (I think three would be good) in one or two sentences. Your body will be your three arguments and if possible sooth the reader into the next one. You first state your argument, give evidence, data, previous research, quote, etc. This is what you will put in your works cited. Then, wrap up that argument and with a new paragraph, start your next one. The last thing will be your conclusion, where you wrap up everything. This should be half a page to three-quarters as well. The rest will be evenly split into your three arguments. The works cited page is very similar to a bibliography. Whenever your paraphrase or quote you will reference. The two most popular methods are MLA and APA. You should pick one (unless your teacher specified one, just pick whichever you feel more comfortable with) and stick with the same one. One last point,before you start writing, it's always good to organize your ideas and make a detailed outline. This will give structure to your paper.
