Where can I find the serial number on my 9.9 mercury outboard?

  • The figure below shows a mercury barometer. Consider two barometers, one using mercury and another using an unknown liquid. Suppose that the pressure above the liquid in each tube is maintained at the same value P, between zero and atmospheric pressure. The height of the unknown liquid is twelve times greater than the height of the mercury. Find the density of the unknown liquid. I thought you just multiplied 760 mm Hg by 12 and got 9129 mm unknown and then multiplied by 9.8, divided this number by atmospheric pressure. I did this and got it wrong. PLEASE HELP!

  • Answer:

    First your have to find the height of the barometer filled with mercury P2 = P1 + (rho x 9.8 x h) --> 760 = 0 + (13600 x 9.8 x h) When you find that h multiply by 12 and the plug it back into the same formula above to find rho (density of unknown liquid) 760 = 0 + (rho x 9.8 x 0.684) = 1133.33
