Geometry Help! i need help on a problem!?

  • okay i have this problem on my homework for 9th grade geometry! Okay, A farmer leans a 12 ft ladder against a barn. if the base of the ladder is 3 ft away from the barn, how hig hon the barn does the ladder reach? i Know that the answer is 11.6 but we have to show our work and i dont know how to get to tht answer! please help! i need thiss by tomorrow!

    Isn't the formula for this x squared plus y squared equals z squared? So just substitute in the numbers and then work it out. 3 is y, z is 12. I'm not 100% percent sure though.
