Is it possible to have a chemical change without a physical change?

Easy: CHEMICAL OR PHYSICAL change ((3 short ?'s)) ?

  • this is a quiz that i got and my answers: V homogenous mixture - chemical V heterogenous mixture - physical X mixing sugar with water - physical V choking on a piece of meat - physical V healing of a wound - chemical V cutting a piece of paper - physical X apple turning brown - chemical X rainbow - physical V tornado - chemical V rain - chemical the X are what the teacher marked wrong. she said she'll give me back the points if I find a reasonable explanation why my answers could be correct i need you to give support to my answers by the questions w/ X's (marked wrong) im pretty sure im right i just need more through explanations mixing water and sugar - physical - because if you decide to mix sugar into water to make sugar water, this would be a physical change as the water could be left out to evaporate and the sugar crystals would remain. rainbow - physical - it is only a reflection not tangible produced by light apple turning brown - it chemically changes decomposes will never be the same

  • Answer:

for an apple decomposing you might also use the argument that there are bacteria at work that eat and digest the apple, changing its chemical composition. the others sound plausible to me though

Geez! I think your rationales are excellent! That's cool that you have a teacher that will let you explain your thinking like that, to get credit! Good luck! :) Oh, maybe include something about gases that result from the decomposition of the apple, too, since "a chemical change makes a substance that wasn't there before".
