Do you think fractions are useful?

Stupid, I know, but...How do you do fractions?

  • Got like, a huge sheet of fractions for review homework, and I kind of forget how to do the basics, cuz it's been like, 5 years since I've done them. I think I might remember, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. So how do you do simple problems like this... Addition: 3/16 + 10/64 Subtraction: 1 1/4 - 2 3/64 Multiplication: 3/8 x 1/32 Division: 10/64 / 1/28 Thanks!!

  • Answer:

Addition: Make common denominators and add the numerators. 3/16 + 10/64 12/64 + 10/64 22/64 11/32 Subtraction: Make common denominators and subtract the numerators. In this case, you must change the mixed numbers to improper fractions. 1 1/4 - 2 3/64 5/4 - 131/64 80/64 - 131/64 -51/64 Multiplication: You multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. 3/8 x 1/32 3/256 Division: You change reciprocal fraction and you flip it (recipricol) and then multiply straight across. 10/64 / 1/28 10/64 x 28/1 280/64 4 24/64 4 3/8 GOOD LUCK! (:

addition: multiply each of the fractions by something that will give them the same denominator (bottom number) and then add their denominators (top numbers). [ex: 2/3+1/2------->4/6+3/6------->7/6 subtraction: same as addition, just subtract the numerators instead of adding them multiplication: just multiply the numerator by the numerator and the denominator by the denominator (ex: 5/2*2/3=10/6) division: change ONE of the fractions to its reciprocal (ex: 1/2 to 2/1) and then just multiply

Take this slowly step by step and it should be quite clear to comprehend. Good Luck. Oh, i love fractions. My math teacher taught me a very easy way to do them. For 3/16 + 10/64, write them down like fractions on your paper. Cross multiply (i.e. 3 x 64, 10 x 16) 3 x 64 is 192, and 10 x 16 is 160. So, write 192 + 160 in the numerator (top line) of the fraction. For the denominator (bottom line), do 64 x 16. which equals 1024. So you should have 192 + 160/1024. Add the 192 and 160 and get 352. now you should have 352/1024. Just simplify and there you have it. :D Do the same for subtraction except instead of adding that 160and 192, subtract it, smaller number from bigger number. For multiplication, just multiply straight across. 3/8 x 1/32 (i.e. 3 x 1 and 8 x 32.) Then simplify. Division is a little bit more trickier. For your example, 10/64 / 1/28, flip the 2nd fraction upside down (reciprocal). so now it should be 28/1. Then just change the operation to multiplication and multiply the 10/64 x 28/1. Simplify after wards. There is another way to Add and subtract fractions easy, but it includes knowing all of your prime factors. In my opinion, the way i showed you is the easiest. If you want to know the prime factor way of adding and subtracting fractions, let me know.

Unknowwwwnnn,

Addition: change them all to a common fraction. So you'd change 3/16 into ?/64 by multiplying by 4. Same for subtraction - common denominator. Multiplication: you just times the top numbers together and then the bottom ones. 3x1 and 8x32 Division : the trickiest. Cba typing it so read this. http://www.school-for-champions.com/arithmetic/fractions_dividing.htm
