How to start fashion business?

How to start a business in fashion? How to produce clothes in quantity? Mass prod versus self making?

  • Alright. Well I am a sewer. I can make my own patterns and sew them. But I want to know how I should go about starting a business in fashion. I have started making a few pieces. A corset, a bodice, and a skirt. But i've decided that it is probably not economical for me to have a business model with me as the sole designer of all of the garments I want to make. I have a few options. I can have my garments mass produced by a) 1 other person(A fashion designer, but I am pretty sure unless I can cut a deal with them, their hiring rate is going to be through the roof.), b) a manufacturing company, which, as I have not had a lot of luck researching manufacturing company rates, i can only think would be more reasonably if i save up the money for it...But not by much Any other suggestions? I really want to get down to business by the middle of February 2010, but by the latest the Fall-Winter of 2010(I think a lot more reasonable date)

You are one step ahead of the game knowing how to sew and make patterns. I dont know where you live or how much you want to invest but if you could find a contactor you could manufacture yourself. I manufacture womens clothing but I am having a hard time finding a decent pattern maker so if you know how to make patterns then go for it.
