Can anyone offer advice on how I can start to sell items on ebay as a business?
-
Hi, hope someone can help I have used ebay for a number of years, both for buying and selling items. I would now like to start selling items as a business but am a little confused with all the information that ebay offers (and doesn't offer!) I intend to purchase items from wholesale suppliers overseas - some of these items will be for personal use, the rest I would like to offer for sale on ebay. I understand that I do not need to be VAT registered as the amount of profit I expect to make will be far less than the threshold set. To get started selling these items on ebay - what do I need to do? - do I have to register as a sole trader and then is it possible to change my ordinary ebay account to a business one? Any information would be greatly appreciated thankyou

Answer:
If you are not VAT registered you will not be able to charge your customers VAT .. you will, however still have to PAY both Customs Duty and VAT on the Imports (just like everyone else).

I don't think you have to do anything other than report your income on your tax return every year. You might want to get a business ID especially if the International companies require it. You may want to get a business Ebay account since it helps with traffic reports and may cut expenses as you obtain customers since you can do more store listings. Even with a store it's still a good idea to do auctions and buy it now to bring potential customers to your store. Good luck!
