How to get clients for Cleaning houses?

  • The economy sucks right now. I need a job and am resorting to cleaning houses. 20 years old, student in college. I posted an AD on craigslist but no one seems to respond or call. What should I do? My next option was to put flyers on peoples door ... Does that sound okay to do or desperate? Because I am but do you have any suggestions for me?

  • Answer:

Treat this as a business. Sit down, work up a marketing and business plan, and then implement it. Some suggestions: * Look for bulletin boards at local hangouts. Suggested hotspots for busy moms: Starbucks, other coffee shops, ice cream parlors, libraries, laundromats. * Now, design a VERY professional looking flyer - not handwritten. Use your computer, and then get color copies made. Be sure to include either business cards (you can get very cheap ones at VistaPrint.com) or something people can tear off to take the number with them. Put the flyers on the bulletin boards you ID'd in the first step. * Offer a signing bonus - if they sign up for regular services, you'll give them 10% off, or something like that. * Create a referral program! Your best source of customers will always be your current satisfied customers. Offer the current customers $10 off their next cleaning if they refer a customer to you who hires you. This is an AMAZINGLY effective way to get clients in just about ANY business, by the way! * Be sure to offer amazing services, if you want raving fans. Be the best house cleaner in the whole town. Find ways to deliver above and beyond. Maybe leave mints on the pillows? Sprigs of lavender in the bathroom in a cute (cheap) glass vase? Sounds silly, but when you deliver beyond what your competitors do, you get remembered. *Consider building an identity for yourself online. How about starting a blog? You can offer free housekeeping tips, write about the importance of keeping a homey home space during times of economic stress, etc. Then put your URL on your business cards! Offer discounts for your readers, too - give them special codes they can use to get 10% off, or whatever. Good luck!

Amazon gave excellent advise. I would also make a list of what makes you superior to other cleaners, then use what you came up with to make your ad and flier. Post your flier, as Amazon suggested, at places where busy people frequent. Gyms and country clubs are good. Call a bunch of insurance agencies and get quotes on a small amount of liability insurance. It protects you from claims (usually false) of damage and theft, plus it is a great sales tool. People feel more comfortable hiring you when you say you have it. Lots more tips and resources on my Squidoo lens-the link is in my Profile! Good luck to you!!!
