Law and Business? Are they Compatible?

Law and Business? Are they Compatible? Is there anyway in the future that I can be a cop and own and manage my own business too? Or is that totally impossible and stupid of me to think about it lol? I would love to own my own Barbershop/Hair Salon. My wife is going to Marinello's within the next four months and I plan on joining the California Highway Patrol as an Officer and hopefully before or after going to the Academy attend Barber College... I am already very talented at cutting hair. When I was at Basic Training at Fort Benning Georgia(Im a member of the California National Gaurd) during Infantry training I started cutting my buddies hair after we had graduated and were getting ready to ship off. I noticed I had a natural talent with line-ups and fades and tapers and all sorts of hair cuts... I cut basically all 250 of my friends before we shipped off to our duty stations. I was cutting all hair textures from my white friends to my black and hispanic and asian friends so I know im talented. I even cut my own hair now and people always want to know where I get it done and I tell them somewhere bogus lol... The thing is... I would like to start a Barber shop with a Hair Salon placed directly next door. I would give military discounts and law enforcement discounts with valid I.D. in the city of Los Angeles. Would it be possible to own and manage the company with my Wife running the Salon side of things while I cut hair on my off days with a full staff that cuts hair Mon-Sunday full time?

Answer:
My suggestion would be to speak with the CHP's human resource department to verify what their policies are on officers owning/operating their own business. They will be able to tell you if there are any regulations you need to be aware of, along with a print out of the regulations for your record. It would seem that it wouldn't be a conflict of interest for you to have a barber shop while holding a full-time position with CHP. I had a friend who owned a bike shop and she sold it to a couple of officers; however, I can't say for sure if they were city, county or state officers.
