Can one store fire me for working at another?

  • To sum it up I work at a store (lets call it store A) that competes with another store that only operates seasonally (store B), which I used to work with. Now when I got the job at store A they said something about they didn't want to hire me if I was just going to go work at store B. Now I'm not so sure about right to work laws in my province (Ontario) but theoretically if I were to find a way to work at store B without it interfering with my work hours at store A would store A be legally allowed to fire me? I'm curious because I doubt a store is allowed to decide what you do in your spare time.

    You should have a copy of the papers you signed when you started working there. If there is a no-compete clause in the papers of the store that is firing you, then you are in the wrong working at the other store, and they could sue you if they choose for breach of contract and a few other things pertaining to espionage, yes espionage. While they more than likely will not sue you if you are just a common worker, if you were higher up in managerial or financial capacity, you could very well have created a problem.
