What is the best way to collect payment from clients as a freelance copy editor?
-
I would like to advertise myself as a freelance copy editor and translator locally and online. I have my rates figured out, but I am not sure how to go about the billing process. I assume I would charge after the work was done, but how could I ensure that the client actually paid me? What is the best method for receiving payments? PayPal? Check?

Answer:
Professionals generally charge 1/3 in advance as down payment on the project, 1/3 on delivery of the first draft, and the final 1/3 on delivery of the final product. You need standard contract forms. What experience do you have as a copy editor or translator? And you have no idea of professional business practices? It would seem you have not even read a book on the subject. If you do not know the business end of the practice, you are not ready to freelance. Do your homework or your biz is dead before you start. You must have experience as a copy editor/translator, references, and professional business practices.

Have a contract, get a deposit & have in the contract pay as you go. Final payment on final delivery not after, or you have to be very selective about your clients. I had a consulting firm and was stiffed a lot, as I got bigger I got very pick, it was no longer worth it to chase people, I had a reputation and if it was not a big company I got as much as I could up front. I hope this helps, just get the work and do what you must to get paid. Best of Luck

Paypal is the safest and easiest option for both parties. It's also good if you are getting paid from someone in a different country.
