I want to start a information network for single parents, but I want to put together events to raise funds.?
-
The events are paid events and no donations are accepted Over the past 5 years I have raised over 200k for groups that are set up to assist single parents. Ask a single parent how much help they are realy getting. Try this, call a non-profit group in your area tell them you are a single father and asked if they can help you. The truth is many say they help untill they are ask to give that help.

Answer:
You would need to be a registered tax-exempt charity with the IRS in order to raise funds and claim they are for a charitable or non-profit purpose, or for the donations to be tax deductible to the donor. People generally do not give donations unless they are tax deductible! You have to form a non-profit, obtain 501(c)(3) or other tax exempt status from the IRS, etc. In short, you need an attorney! It can take three years to get approved and everything! There are already existing organizations (e.g. Parents Without Partners) for single parents. So what can you do that no other organization is doing? How much funding are you putting into the organization? If you think you're going to start some organization, get donations, and pay yourself any salary or anything, you are headed for so much trouble you won't believe it. There are people who are promoting the idea of starting a "non-profit" as a way of making money, earning a salary. Do NOT fall for that scam! If you want to start a charity or non-profit, it is going to cost you a great deal of money, and you cannot depend on donations to fund your organization even after you get IRS tax-exemption. Too many "charities" and too few donors with too little money.
