Do i have a chance at getting a nice office job(medical assistant/Administrative assistant/assistant manager)?
-
I have previously worked as a cashier for 6 months at a retail store and then i worked at a community college as an administrative assistant for 2 years. Do i have a chance of getting a job like medical assistant, bank teller, administrative assistant, assistant manager, or supervisor? I really don't want to go back to working in stores. Is there alot of competition for these other good jobs?...do i have a chance with the kind of experience i have? Oh and i am a college student too for the past 2 years.

Answer:
Medical assistant requires special training. With your 2 years as admin asst at the community college, you'd have a shot at other admin asst jobs. For asst manager, would depend on asst mgr of WHAT.

You will have a chance at those jobs once you get the education. Go to the Occupational Outlook Handbook site of the Department of Labor. Click on the letter of the alphabet for that career and read all the requirements. http://www.bls.gov/oco/ Their site even has statistics on jobs in your region. Each career has requirements but each job may have more or less depending on the company. Your administrative assistance experience should be a great advantage. You might want to go to the job posting board of that community college and see if anything is posted you would be interested in. They used to have these bulletin boards up near the various departments when I was in college. Just because there is a lot of competition is no reason not to try. Once you have the skills, you might have to move to a different region of the country but no matter what the projections are you still have a chance at any particular job. Do your homework so you know what is entailed and go for it.
You will have a better chance after you graduate college in the mean while they will only pay you a small wage.
This is America, if where a black man can be voted into the highest office - then you most certainly have the chance - to get the job of your dreams. If retail is not your bag, certainly state it on your resume, as a job you did but do not consider it as a suitable career. Emphasis your desire for more challenges & responsibilities.
